David Michael Letterman graduated from high school in his hometown and entered Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he met his first wife Michelle Cook. He graduated from the Department of Radio and Television in 1969, after which he was accepted to the local television station WLWI as a presenter of weather forecast and film announcements. In 1975, Letterman moved to Los Angeles, intending to become a comedy writer-screenwriter. He also developed his stand-up comedian talent by appearing on various television shows, most notably The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In 1978, Letterman became a regular participant in this show, gaining popularity with viewers for his original sense of humor.

Turning Point

Following his success as a guest on the evening show, David Michael Letterman  received his own comedy television show on NBC’s Morning Air, The David Letterman Show. Due to low ratings, the show was canceled in 1980, but Letterman did not give up, and in 1982 his new show “Late Night With David Letterman” was released. From the very first release, the show gained popularity among the audience. Letterman conducted his program wittily, unpredictably, sometimes even a little aggressively, which often baffled the guests. The show aired quite late, so little-known people with whom Letterman acted rather harshly, upsetting them during interviews, acted as invited guests. Because of this, celebrities were in no hurry to come to Late Night with   Letterman. In 1993, when NBC was faced with the question of a candidate to replace Johnny Carson on his Johnny Carson Tonight Show, David Michael Letterman , who had been a regular on the show at one time, hoped to get the show given to him. In addition, Johnny Carson himself promised Letterman that he would become his successor. But the bosses ordered otherwise, and Jay Leno became the host of the show.  It has long become a must-see for every star promoting a new film and every politician hoping to collect votes. And Letterman himself is rightfully considered one of the most respected presenters in the world.

Health Issue

On January 14, 2000, Letterman was diagnosed with a blockage in a coronary artery. He was urgently hospitalized and operated on. Letterman spent about a month in the hospital, receiving several thousand postcards with the wishes of a speedy recovery during this time. During this time, “The Late Show with David Letterman” was hosted by guest hosts. On February 21, 2000, Letterman, having recovered from a difficult operation, returned to his usual chair. He invited the doctors and nurses who looked after him at the hospital to the TV show and publicly thanked each of them. This episode of the show was one of the most emotional in the history of the program. In addition to his own show, David Michael Letterman acted as a producer of several films and TV series, and also played in films and on television. In 2006 he was the host of the 78th Academy Awards.

Personal life

As for private life, Letterman does not like to put it out in public. In 1977, he divorced his first wife, followed by a long relationship with the main writer of his show, Merill Markoe, at one time the couple was even engaged. Letterman’s next girlfriend was Regina Lasko, who in 2003 bore him a son, Harry Joseph. In 2009, Letterman and Lasko entered into an official marriage. In his son Letterman, who at the time of the birth of his son was 53 years old, sees the successor of his work.
