His’s full name was Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater. He was born on December 9, 1898. And he died on August 14, 1966. He was an American football player as well as an excellent judge. He was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Centennial Class of 2020.He played college football at the University of Iowa from 1918 to 1921. He played from the tackle position on the line. His first team was the Team All-Americans in 1921 and a member of the Hawkeyes national championship team in 1921. Duke Slater joined the NFL in 1922. Where he became the first black linesman in league history. Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater played ten seasons in the NFL for the Chicago Cardinals in addition to the Rock Island Independent. In which seven out of ten all-supporters were selected. He received  a law degree in 1928 and practiced law as a Chicago lawyer.In 1948, he became the second African-American judge in the history of Chicago to be elected to the Cook County Municipal Court. Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater’s birthplace is Normal, Illinois.His nickname comes from the name of the family dog, Duke. He became pastor of AME Church at the age of 13, after which he moved to Clinton, Iowa. His’s father initially convinced him to take up football at Clinton High School. But he had to play football. So he went on a hunger strike for several days to get his insistence. After all, his father finally agreed on one condition that he took precautions to avoid injury. And then he always kept this in mind and even if he got hurt, he used to hide it from his father. Because he loved playing football and he did not want his father to know about his injury and he would not mind playing football. When he was in high school, each player had to bring his own shoes and helmet. But his’s father couldn’t afford both the things, so he gave Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater the option of choosing between shoes or a helmet. So he took the shoes. Her’s feet were so big that his shoes had to be specially ordered from Chicago.From 1913 to 1915, Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater played three football seasons for Clinton High School. He won two Iowa state championships in 1913 and 1914. In addition the school had compiled him a 22-3-1 record in three years.He mainly played in tackle. And he led Clinton in scoring as a senior in 1915. He ran for six touchdowns from fullback position.

Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater’s father’s name is George Slater.  His father was a Methodist minister. He had four sisters. He was the only brother of his four sisters. His mother died when he was 11 years old.

Education

He enrolled at Clinton High School to complete his schooling. After passing high school, he took admission in the University of Iowa. He was enrolled by the University of Iowa College of Law after receiving his degree.

Cause of Death

Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater died in 1966 from colon cancer at the age of 67. His grave is in Mount Glenwood Cemetery, south of Chicago.

After Frederick Wayman “Duke” Slater retired, the NFL implemented an unofficial color ban. No African-American players appeared in the NFL from 1934 to 1945. Duke helped black football players play by assembling and coaching African-American players.
