Elton John has also made a significant contribution to the fight against AIDS, has been involved in charity and educational work since the late 1980s.

Birth / Childhood

Elton  was born to Air Force Squadron Commander Stanley Dwight and Shailey Harris. Little Elton rarely saw his father, the family broke up in 1962, but his mother remarried, to Fred Fairbrother, when Elton was 15. Elton   began playing the piano at the age of four, was able to pick any melody masterly, and at eleven he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he later studied for six years.

Beginning

His first group was called Bluesology. During that period,  John worked as an assistant in music publishing houses, and performed solo in a bar at night. By the mid-1960s, Bluesology toured the United States with renowned rhythm and blues musicians.   Reginald Kenneth Dwight was inspired by the lyrics of the songwriter Taupin, who also did not pass the casting with King Crimson, and wrote the music for them, sent the compositions by mail, received a response, correspondence began, and a creative union emerged that still exists today.

It was during this period that the pseudonym  John appeared (the merger of the name of saxophonist Elton Dean and Long John Baldry). The duo worked for a record company as songwriters and wrote songs for Lulu and Roger Cook, creating compositions in one and a half to two hours. Elton and Taupin invite the producer and arranger to cooperate to create the first serious album, which was released in 1970 and was called Reginald Kenneth Dwight and already included the well-known formula for the success of the musician’s work – rock songs and soulful ballads. Then the image, the character of   John, was born: outrageous costumes and glasses, an earring in the right ear, a falsetto, a chink in the front teeth, red hair, a manner of execution (which amazed the reporters of that time).

Career

The album “17-11-70” includes covers of early compositions by John and Taupin with an undeniable influence of gospel, boogie-woogie and blues. In 1972, guitarist Davey Johnston joined the band, thus forming the main line-up of the Reginald Kenneth Dwight  Band, where all the musicians were instrumentalists and had strong voices. In 1973,singer  opened Rocket Records and created the album Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player. In 1975, the  John Band disbanded: Olsson and Murray, tired of continuous work, left the line-up. The new roster will debut at Wembley Stadium in London in front of 75,000 spectators.

The duet with Kikki Dee in 1976 brought incredible commercial success: their single Don’t Go Breaking My Heart topped the American and English charts. In 1980, Reginald Kenneth Dwight gives a benefit concert in Central Park in New York in front of an audience of 400 thousand people, near the house where John Lennon lived, to whom he dedicated the performance of the song Imagine. Three months later, Lennon was killed near this house.

Personal Life

Reginald Kenneth Dwight announced that he was bisexual in 1976 in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. This recognition was a compromise, since the musician did not dare to immediately confess his homosexuality: he was afraid to upset the fans, although many were still shocked even from the “softened version”. In 1984 he married Renate Bloel, but the marriage lasted four years. Later, Elton  admitted that he actually considers himself homosexual. In the 1970s and 1980s, he seriously suffered from depression and drug and alcohol addiction, bulimia, but his new husband, David Furnish, helped to get through it. In 2004, the UK ratified the Civil Status Act, which introduced the concept of “same-sex marriage” into legislation. Elton   and David Fairnish legalized the relationship. Singer and his husband found happiness in fatherhood, their child from a surrogate mother was named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John. The couple’s youngest son, Elijah Daniel Furnish-John, was born on January 11, 2013.
