On December 11, 2019, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was named “Person of the Year” by the American magazine Time. She was born on January 3, 2003 in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Her mother is the famous Swedish opera singer Malena Ernman (born in 1970), her father is an actor, producer, screenwriter and director Svante Thunberg (1969). Greta has a younger sister, Beata. In 2014, doctors diagnosed girls with Asperger’s syndrome (a form of autism), attention deficit disorder, and signs of hyperactivity.
Greta Thunberg Biography
As a teenager, Greta studied a lot of literature on climate change and environmental protection, became a vegan, refused to fly an airplane (due to the high level of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere). Her beliefs also influenced her parents: they installed solar panels in the house, started growing vegetables in their summer cottage, and began to ride bicycles. According to media reports, Malena Ernman also stopped using airlines, which negatively affected her career. In 2018, Greta’s parents published the book “Scenes from the Heart” (about the diseases of their children and how it influenced their views).
Beginning
In May 2018, Greta’s article on climate was published, which won a competition in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. After that, the schoolgirl was invited to their meetings by activists of the Swedish environmental organization Fossilfritt Dalsland, and after a while Greta decided to organize an action with her classmates in support of the fight against climate change. Not finding like-minded people among them, she began to act independently. In August of the same year, she announced her refusal to attend school until the authorities of the country take serious measures to combat global warming. In the first days of September 2018, before the parliamentary elections, Greta began holding one-off actions near the Riksdag under the slogan “School strike for the climate”. She handed out leaflets outlining her position. On September 8, on the eve of the vote, she proclaimed “Fridays for the Future” – weekly demonstrations around the world outside legislative buildings. This call has resonated with young people in different countries.
According to Greta, by May 2019, about 1.5 million people had taken part in about 2,000 events in 123 countries. Thanks to social networks, she gained worldwide fame. She began to speak at various international forums dedicated to the protection of the environment. Many journalists call her “harsh” and “sarcastic”, not wanting “everyone to please.” She herself believes that her feature – “seeing the world in black and white” – allows her to “understand more sharply what is good and what is bad.” In June 2019, Greta’s first collection of speeches in English was released. In July, after graduating from high school, she made the decision to participate in climate events in the Americas. In this regard, she took an academic leave (in a year she plans to continue her education at the gymnasium).
Award & Nomination
Over the course of a year, Greta has become the epitome of the fight against climate change. She has received many awards for her work, including a nomination for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Time magazine included her in the list of the 100 most influential people of 2019, and also named her Person of the Year. In September, she spoke at the UN Climate Change Summit in New York, where she delivered one of the most talked about speeches of the year. Also in 2019, Penguin published No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference, a collection of Greta’s inspirational speeches on global warming and climate change.
