Prior to her acceptance at the University of Michigan she competed for Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School and the London Aquatic Club. In 2016, she finished sixth in the 100m butterfly event trials held in Canada. In 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Mac Neil was part of the Canadian women’s team. She first won the bronze medal as part of the 4×100 meters freestyle relay team. Taylor Rook, Rebecca Smith, Penny Oleksiak and Kayla Sanchez were in her team.After that, Mac Neil competed in the women’s 100 meter butterfly in 2019 and won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly. She defeated four-time world and current Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom.

She then qualified to represent Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in June 2021. McNeill competed as part of the Canadian team for the first time in the 4×100 meters freestyle relay. She replaced Ruck for the event final and won the silver medal swimming in a split of 53.47 seconds. And this is McNeill’s first Olympic medal. And the next day,s he participated in the final of the 100m butterfly event in which she won the gold medal. Here she set a new personal best and America’s record of 55.59. She was the first Canadian gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
