Marcelinho soon became the team’s core player. In 1990, he helped the club win the Brazilian Cup, and two years later won the national championship. In 1993, Carioca suffered a setback: he was the only one not to score a penalty kick in the Libertadores Super Cup final with Sao Paulo.

Marcelinho Carioca Biography

In the same 1993, the leaders of Flamengo, against the will of the player, began negotiations to sell it to Corinthians for 800 thousand dollars. On December 23, the day Marcelinho was introduced by the Corinthians player, he said: “I came to Corinthians to become the champion.” Between 1994 and 1997, Carioca won the Brazilian Cup with the club, where he scored two goals in the final against Gremio, and two São Paulo State Championships. Also at that time, the footballer was involved in a tax evasion case. In 1997, Marcelinho was sold to Spanish Valencia for $ 7 million. The contract was signed for 5 years. However, the Brazilian was unable to adapt to Spanish football, as a result of which he spent only 5 matches for the club. The midfielder decided to return to his homeland.

Edoardo Jose Farah, President of the Paulista Football Federation, bought the player’s transfer. He came up with a scheme, which he called “Call Marceligno”, according to it, representatives of the four leading clubs in Sao Paulo had to call a paid number (price – three reais); the team with the largest number of phone calls will sign a contract with Carioca. The victory was won by Corinthians: fans of this club accounted for 62.5% of calls; Sao Paulo gained 20.3%, Santos 9.5% and Palmeiras 7.7%. In Corinthians, Marceligno played for three more seasons. He became, as promised, the champion of the country with the club, won the São Paulo championship twice, and also helped the team win the club world championship. In 1999, Marcelinho won the Ballon d’Or awarded to the best player in the Brazilian Championship. The footballer was forced to leave Corinthians by a conflict with his teammate, Ricardinho, as a result of which all teammates took up arms against Marcelinho, who was forced to leave the club, unable to cope with the pressure.

International Career

Marcelinho was called up for the Brazilian national team several times, but did not appear on the field. In 1998, Wanderlei Lushemburgo became the coach of the national team, who knew the midfielder well from his work at Corinthians. The player himself warmly welcomed the arrival of the mentor to this post. Lushembrugo invited Carioca to his debut match against Yugoslavia. Moreover, he put him in the starting lineup, and the midfielder did not disappoint the coach, scoring a goal already in the 16th minute of the game with a free-kick; the meeting ended in a draw 1: 1. He then played a match against Ecuador, where he also scored, and his team won 5: 1. But then the footballer stopped being called up to the camp of the national team. Marceligno himself named the reason for the fact that he recaptured the girl from Lushemburgh, and he thus took revenge on him. On April 25, 2001, Carioca played his third and last international match, in which the Brazilians drew with Peru.
