Since childhood, she was fond of music, literature and theater, and at the age of 14 she began to sing in local clubs. After graduating from the Faculty of Education at the University of Texas, she worked as a school teacher in elementary grades, and in 1977 completely switched to music. After her compositions won the Kerville Folk Festival competition, local record label BF Deal first included Griffith’s songs in one of their compilations, and then released the singer’s debut album, There is a Light Beyond These Woods (1978). the album Poet in My Window (1982) was also released on the local label Featherbed Records.

In 1984, with producer Jim Rooney, the singer recorded in Nashville the pivotal album Once in a Very Blue Moon (1984), published by Philo Records and gaining success with a country audience. In honor of the title song from this disc, Griffith named her accompanying group – Blue Moon Orchestra. In 1985, she moved to Nashville, released The Last of the True Believers, and was recruited into MCA Nashville by producer Tony Brown along with other non-formatted country artists such as fellow countrymen Steve Earl and Lyle Lovett. The result was the Lone Star State of Mind (1987) and Little Love Affairs (1988). Despite the high quality of the material, Griffith was practically ignored by country radio stations and the label MCA, dissatisfied with such results, handed her over to their pop division in Los Angeles. This characteristically affected the sound of the singer’s next album, Storms (1989), which showed high sales, but did not generate interest from the country audience. Late Night Grande Hotel (1991) also clearly demonstrated Griffith’s departure from his folk and country roots. For the next 10 years, her albums did not make it to the Top Country Albums chart, but consistently appeared on the Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart. Griffith’s growth in popularity was also helped by the interpretation of her songs by other artists: Katy Mattea (“Love at the Five and Dime”) and Susie Bogass (“Outbound Plane”), who entered the Top 5 and Top 10 of the Hot Country Song charts in 1986 and 1992, respectively. In addition, the singer received success in the UK and especially in Ireland. Her songs echoed the political situation in this country and, unlike other foreign musicians, she was not afraid to tour there during periods of terrorist threat.

Since then, Griffith often plays in the UK, and calls Ireland a second home. In 1992, Griffith moved to Elektra Records and returned to her signature and more traditional sound with the Other Voices, Other Rooms (1993) interpretation album. The disc paid tribute to the influences of country and folk artists such as Townes Van Zandt, John Prine and Bob Dylan. The latter two also featured Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, Alison Krauss and Guy Clarke on the disc. For this work, Griffith received the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album (1994). In 1996, she sang with The Crickets on the Buddy Holly tribute album Not Fade Away (Remembering Buddy Holly). Since then, Griffith has often toured accompanied by this group. In 1999, the singer released The Dust Bowl Symphony, which consisted of new versions of her old material, re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra. The disc did not make it to the Billboard charts for the first time in 10 years.
