Neeraj Chopra, who won India’s first gold medal in Javelin throw at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 2021. Subedar Neeraj Chopra VSM was born on 24 December 1997. He is an Indian track and field athlete. Apart from this, he is a Junior Commissioned Officer  in the Indian Army. They compete in javelin throw. He broke his own national record by throwing the javelin at 88.07 meters in a single plow. He became the Olympic champion in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with a winning throw of 87.58 meters. Prior to this his best was the gold medal winning throw of 88.06m at the 2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. He was selected as the flag-bearer at India’s opening ceremony at the Asian Games. He was the first World U20 champion in his career to set a world U-20 record of 86.48m. He is the first Indian athlete to win a world title in track and field in Under-20s.

Apart from this, Neeraj Chopra also has two sisters. Neeraj Chopra’s father is a farmer from Khandara, a small village in Panipat, while his mother is a housewife.


Neeraj Chopra’s weight had increased a lot in childhood due to his family’s affection. In such a situation,he started exercising to lose weight. Apart from this, his tendency towards sports also started increasing to reduce weight. HE was very fond of Kabaddi in the beginning. There was no stadium in his village, so he started going to Shivaji Nagar Stadium in Panipat, 16-17 km away from the village to practice.


He had a friend named Jaiveer at Shivaji Nagar Stadium, who used to come there to practice Javelin Throw. One day in such a game, Jaiveer asked him to throw the javelin. When he threw the javelin, Jaiveer was very impressed with him and advised he to practice javelin throwing. He liked his friend’s point of view, but the problem in front of him was that his weight was 80 kg. In such a situation, he lost 20 kg in just two months to try his hand at javelin throw.

After losing weight, he had the problem of buying javelin (spear). Actually at that time a good quality javelin used to cost more than one lakh rupees, which was difficult for his family to buy. In such a situation, he bought a javelin for 6-7 thousand rupees and started practicing with it. After this he practiced javelin throw for 7-7 hours a day. This is how he became a great javelin thrower.

1.  In 2012, at the Under-16 National Junior Championships in Lucknow, he set a record with a throw of 68.46 meters and won a gold medal.

2. In 2013 finished second in the National Youth Championship and made it to the IAAF World Youth Championship to be held in Ukraine.

3.  In 2015, at the Inter-University Championship, he won the age group record with a throw of 81.04 meters.
