His father’s name is Percy Macdonald and mother’s name is Ferne Macdonald. Both his parents were teachers. The couple worked at CFB Valcartier, a military base north of Quebec City. Percy Macdonald died of heart disease in 1990. He has an older brother and a younger brother. The elder brother’s name is Neil MacDonald. Neil is a journalist for CBC News. Neil is married to CTV News journalist Joyce Napier.

He started a video podcast, Norm Macdonald Live, in 2013. On which Norm interviewed comedians and other celebrities. He released Norm Macdonald Has A Show which was a Netflix talk show in 2018. Which had the same premise as his podcast. He acted in many films throughout his career. In addition to films, he guest-starred on talk shows such as Conan, Late Night with David Letterman and The Howard Stern Show. He lent his voice to the animated show Mike Tyson Mysteries. So he is also a voice actor in the same way.


He did his schooling from Quebec High School, then studied at Gloucester High School in Ottawa.


He made his first appearance in comedy at stand-up clubs in Ottawa. Its show was shown on amateur nights at Yuk Yuk in 1985. He made an appearance at the 1986 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He was declared by the Montreal Gazette as “one of the hottest comics in this country”. He performed as a contestant on Star Search until 1990.  And after that he joined Saturday Night Live.

Personal Life

He married Connie Vaillancourt in 1988. Connie gave birth to Norm’s first son in 1993, whom they named Dylan. He split from Connie Billancourt in April 1999.


He died of cancer in Los Angeles on September 14, 2021, at the age of 61. He was diagnosed with leukemia nine years ago.
