During her early years in Canada, Rupi Kaur was bullied as she could not speak English as it was not her native language. The Gurmukhi script has influenced Rupi Kaur’s work a great deal and like the script, she also writes exclusively in lowercase and uses only periods as punctuation marks. It is a symbolic gesture of honoring her roots. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she said that she wondered whether to be an actor or a famous artist. However, for him, it was her poetry that did the magic and brought him to the show.

Rupi Kaur controversy
Rupi Kaur landed in a controversy in March 2015 when she posted a picture of herself on Instagram with spots of menstrual blood on her clothes and bed sheets. This was done to bring to light the various social norms where women are prohibited from entering holy places or going out of homes during menstruation. Later, Instagram pulled up photos for not complying with the site’s terms of service, to which Rupi Kaur replied, “Thank you Instagram for providing me with accurate responses to criticize my work”. However, the Instagram team apologized, claiming that the photos were accidentally deleted. She has also been criticized for some plagiarism in her work. One of her contemporaries, Nayraheed Waheed, has tried to reach out to her saying that Rupi Kaur’s material is similar to her own.
