Tupac Amaru Shakur, better known as 2Pac (later – Makaveli), was born on June 16, 1971 in the east area of Harlem (New York, USA) in a family of activists of the African American radical left-wing organization Black Panthers Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur (née Ellis Fay Williams). He was born a month after his mother was released after being acquitted in a conspiracy case against the American government. The boy’s father left the family even before his birth. Tupac was raised by his stepfather, Dr. Mutulu Shakur. Tupac’s godfather, Elmer Geronimo Pratt, was the leader of the Black Panthers. Later, Shakur, drawn by his mother into this party, got himself a tattoo in the form of a panther. At birth, the father and mother named the future musician Lesane Parish Crooks, but a year later, at baptism, they changed their son’s name to Tupac Amaru Shakur. In Arabic, the first two words mean “Flashing Serpent” and the third means “Thank God.” This name was given to Tupac by his parents in memory of the Peruvian freedom fighter, a descendant of an Indian leader. Tupac’s childhood was closely associated with poverty, the struggle for survival in the ghetto, oppression, racial divisions, crime, and wars of various groups. The boy was surrounded by members of the Black Liberation Army, a nationalist militant organization, who were later convicted of atrocities. His aunt Assata Shakur was arrested for the murder of a police officer, but she escaped from the colony. Shakur’s godfather, Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt, was the leader of the Black Panthers, and his stepfather, Dr. Mutulu Shakur, was on the FBI’s “black list” for several years as the most wanted criminal, and in 1986 he was arrested for armed robbery with a triple murder.
